After leaving the orphanage, Haneul moves into her first home using a government support fund. She fills the small room with furniture and dreams, but soon her money runs out. One morning, she wakes to find the space transformed—her belongings gone, the exit vanished, and only an ATM remains. As the room shrinks around her, her childhood friend Cheolsu appears and gives her a mission: find the mysterious “Yellow Bird” to reclaim her lost home and sense of self.

Directors Ji Wan Park and Joan Ji Yey Hui first met during an interview for a web magazine and instantly connected, talking for hours and discovering shared values. When offered How to Open the Door, they chose to co-write and co-direct, developing the script through interviews with care leavers. Their complementary approaches created strong on-set synergy, helping them overcome challenges together. The result is a heartfelt film that marks the beginning of a promising creative partnership between the two directors.
